WP 404 Auto Redirect: Catching Visitors Before You Lose Them

Every website accumulates broken links. Pages get renamed, sites get rebuilt, old URLs get shared in emails and are bookmarked by customers. When someone follows one of those links and lands on an error page, most of them leave.

That’s the problem this plugin solves. Instead of showing a dead end, WP 404 Auto Redirect sends the visitor to the most similar page on your site.

Why 404s cost more than people think

A broken link isn’t just untidy. If a customer clicks through from an old bookmark, a directory listing or an email campaign and hits an error page, the reasonable assumption is that you’ve stopped offering that service. They go back to Google and click a competitor.

The risk is highest exactly when it hurts most: after a site rebuild, when the old URLs are still circulating everywhere, and around marketing campaigns, when a single bad link in an email can send an entire send-out to an error page.

How we configure it

Similarity weighting. The plugin matches broken URLs to existing content. Weighted too loosely, visitors land on something irrelevant, an old gallery from years back rather than the current one. We weight title matching more heavily than body content, and factor in categories and tags, so the match is genuinely close.

Number of suggestions. Showing more options seems helpful, but visitors rarely look past the second. Three is our default. Beyond that, the choice becomes the problem.

A short delay. An instant redirect leaves people confused: they clicked one thing and arrived somewhere else without knowing why. A one-second delay is enough to register that the original link was broken, without being long enough to lose them.

Check the logs. The plugin records which URLs are throwing 404s. That log is the useful part. It tells you which broken links are actually being hit, so you can put proper 301 redirects in place for the ones that matter.

It’s a safety net, not a fix

Worth being clear about this: automatic redirection is a fallback, not a substitute for doing redirects properly. When you know a URL has changed, set a 301 redirect to its correct replacement; that preserves the link equity and sends people exactly where they should go. WP 404 Auto Redirect exists to catch everything you didn’t know about: the old links you’d forgotten, the URLs someone shared years ago, the pages you didn’t realise anyone was still visiting.
